The Last Summer, a new movie on Netflix, came out on May 3rd, 2019. It was directed by William Bindley, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Bindley. The two main film stars are KJ Apa and Maia Mitchell. KJ Apa is well known from the current show called Riverdale and Maia Mitchell is most likely known from The Fostersand Teen Beach Movie. The film’s genre is an American romantic comedy. This movie’s targeted audience is teenagers, specifically seniors graduating high school.
This movie expresses the sense of a entering new chapter in one’s life. The new chapter after high school may lead to getting a higher education or even training for a specific career, but no matter what path one takes - it’s filled with good-byes to the past and hellos to new beginnings. Throughout the movie, it shows activities that the main characters did during their summer because it was their final break before they went their separate ways to college. Their summer was filled with various activities for them such as jobs, parties, family problems, working hard for that last-minute scholarship to ensure financial needs from their desired school, internships, etc.
It’s a very accurate film in many aspects when it comes to the summer activities, saying goodbye to friends and family, and most importantly in its of portrayal of unexpected family problems. The film is not just accurate, but it’s also very relatable for seniors that are graduating. It shows points of view from not only different races, but different members of subgroups - popular and the more quiet. It really does get a good grip on the average high-schooler’s life. Even if the viewer doesn’t relate to one of the groups shown, the stories within the groups consist of something different that anybody can relate to. This film is similar to The Perfect Date since the time period is also a senior year in a high school. It’s a different storyline but both movies are similar. If you enjoyed The Perfect Date, then you will love this movie. The Last Summer gets an A+.
