Everyday 100 people are killed with guns in America. The US also holds the record for most gun-related homicides for every 100,000 residents. There’s an average of 36,383 deaths per year with 22,274 of the being suicide. Colorado has now passed a legislation that allows law enforcement, family, or household members to petition the court to have weapons seized or surrendered. This bill also states that in order to repossess the weapon(s) the owner must prove he/she no longer poses a risk.
To begin I want to state that I am a gun advocate. I plan to obtain a conceal and carry permit later in my future for self-defense purposes. Ever heard of the phrase “guns don’t kill people, people kill people”? This phrase is a fact. We humans are the ones wielding the guns and what’s stopping us from using any other object to kill? In this sense, it comes down to how dangerous a particular weapon is in addition to the owner. This is what makes the previously stated legislation great because it still allows anyone(permitted) to own weapons.
To only have law enforcement handling firearms may be our justice systems demise. Not only will this allow for an increase in the loss of defenseless-lives but it could also increase the amount of “dirty cops” by having such power. An example can be seen in a home robbery. The owner of the house will be defenseless against the robber until law enforcement comes, possibly resulting in injury or even death of the owner.
I cannot see reason why not to make guns control stricter for the safety of others. However, there are still other factors that come into play. For example, some argue that making guns illegal( or harder to obtain) would render most citizens defenseless against criminals who can inevitably obtain a gun. I believe that, because guns will always be around, gun control should be lifted. My idea is to fight guns with guns. I don’t advocate fighting but self-reliance
